Install VeraCrypt on Ubuntu GNU Linux
Applies to
- Ubuntu 18.04
- Ubuntu 18.10
- All other distribution if using the Veracrypt installer (minimum Kernel 2.6 or compatible)
Installation from PPA repository
Open a terminal and run the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unit193/encryption
sudo apt update
sudo apt install veracrypt
Installation using Veracrypt Installer
Open a terminal and download the latest Veracrypt for Linux from the official website
Adapt the below commands depending on the current version of VeraCrypt (v1.23 as I’m writing this post) :
https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Downloads.html
wget https://launchpad.net/veracrypt/trunk/1.23/+download/veracrypt-1.23-setup.tar.bz2
Extract the content of the archive
tar xvf veracrypt-1.23-setup.tar.bz2
Run the installer (In this case : VeraCrypt will be for 64bits processors architectur and include the graphical user interface)
Use sudo if your not logged with a priviledged account.
./veracrypt-1.23-setup-gui-x64
Follow the installation wizard.
Once completed, run VeraCrypt from the command line for the first time (as non-root user).
