Update RaspberryPi firmware

Based on a Raspian installation.
Update your distribution package
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Install GIT
sudo apt-get install git-core
Download the firmware update
sudo wget https://raw.github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update/master/rpi-update -O /usr/bin/rpi-update && sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-update
Run the update
sudo rpi-update
After the firmware update completes, you should see something like the following:

Performing self-update
ARM/GPU split is now defined in /boot/config.txt using the gpu_mem option!
We're running for the first time
Setting up firmware (this will take a few minutes)
Using HardFP libraries
If no errors appeared, your firmware was successfully setup
A reboot is needed to activate the new firmware
