Error code 0x84B20001 when installing update for SQL Server 2008 R2
Issue
When installing an update for Microsoft SQL Server, you receive an error message (e.g. with error code 0x84B20001) at the end of the process.
It’s mostly due to a previous update that failed to install and left some registry keys in a non standard state.
Applied to
This solution has been tested when installing SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 or SP2 (SP2 32 bits in my case)
Solution
Open a registry editor and go to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\ConfigurationState
I suggest you to do a backup of the keys (File -> Export) now… 😉
Set the following values to 1 (no matter what the current values are [3 or 4])
MPT_AGENT_CORE_CNI
SQL_Engine_Core_Inst
SQL_Replication_Core_Inst
Restart the computer and try to install again
